Scale and aesthetic were very important throughout our decision-making process about the exterior elevations. We wanted it to fit the style of the neighborhood while also fitting within the challenging limits of our petite Chantilly backyard. The answer to this design problem was to float the second story structure on columns, that would allow us to not loose precious yard space, would create intimately-scaled canopy circulation under new second floor while requiring minimal modifications to the existing structure. We also resolved vertical circulation by allowing the stair to stay out of sight on the exterior of the back of the building, maximizing interior space for office and shop. It also provided an opportunity to have some family storage under these stairs.
